MIDSUMMA
REVIEW
The Age, 24 January 2006
By Joel Crotty
This year's Midsumma cabaret
line-up includes familiar names such as Dolly
Diamond, Luke Gallagher, Catherine Campbell and
Enda Markey and their familiarity helps create
the sense of community that the festival tries
hard to promote.
This time, Markey, Liston
Williams, Luke Barron and Peter Rutherford
present a charming production of songs made
famous by Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and Barbra
Streisand.
Solo spots were interpolated
with team numbers arranged by Rutherford. These
included Everybody Says Don't, Happy
Days Are Here Again/Get Happy and Over
the Rainbow/People/Maybe This Time and were
probably the best in terms of vocal presentation.
Some of the solo numbers
were also delivered strongly, such as I'm the
Greatest Star by Barron and Streisand
Got There First by Markey.
On the night, Barron who had
the strongest voice; while Williams had a
tendency to sing flat in the upper register.
Barron is certainly
talented. Look out for him in a planned Melbourne
season, with Rutherford, of their show, TEN
THINGS I HATE ABOUT CABARET.
Overall, the performers
worked well together and their strong song list
made LEGENDS enjoyably quaint,
easy-going entertainment.
"...The best show I
have seen in ages. All 3 guys sang brilliantly! A
great night filled with extremely good vocals. I
have not seen in a very long time, 3 men who were
so well suited to perform together"
Q Magazine,

"...The good looks
of a boy-band, but sophisticated performance
qualities of 'Il-Divo'... These three guys will
be really big - watch this space"
